Have you ever admired a person or group of people for their refined manners and wished you were a little more like them? Polite, neat, proud and always smiling, these types of people command respect and create a pleasant atmosphere all around them. They all cleverly use a few basic rules of etiquette.

Generally speaking, etiquette involves a set of rules and norms that pertain to good manners and polite behavior in public. It is an important aspect of our relationships and helps create a respectful and pleasant atmosphere.

Here are a few basic rules of etiquette that sophisticated people observe:

Greeting and Introducing: Always greet people when you meet them, using appropriate addresses and titles. When there is another person with you, be sure to introduce them.

Respectful Distance: Respect the personal space of others by striving to have appropriate distance between you when talking and meeting. There is another aspect to respecting personal space - avoid asking people uncomfortable and overly personal questions. Stay away from sensitive or controversial topics such as politics, religion or finances.

Always On Time: A basic rule of etiquette is punctuality. Make sure you arrive on time for all your appointments and commitments. Being late is considered a lack of respect for the other person's time.

"Please" and "Thank You": These words should be part of your daily vocabulary as they convey respect. Always thank people for their time, attention or gifts.

Offline conversations: Do not use your cell phone during meetings, events, eating at a restaurant or conversation. It is distracting and shows disrespect to the company. It's a good idea to mute your phone before the meeting to avoid the temptation to check it.

Table manners: Follow the basic rules of table etiquette - learn how to use cutlery properly, don't talk with your mouth full and don't start eating before everyone has received their order. Also - your elbows and cell phone have no place at the table.

Choose your clothes: Choose appropriate clothing for different occasions. Always research what the dress code is for the event you are attending so you don't feel inadequate. Formal events require formal attire, while more informal events allow you to let your imagination run wild. But remember - whatever you do, it's never appropriate to go out in a tracksuit. The only exception is going to the gym.

Respect people: Treat everyone with respect, regardless of their social position, age or profession. This is perhaps the clearest display of good manners.

Speak softly: Try to control your voice and speak in a normal tone. Avoid raising your voice, especially in public spaces. Loud talking or shouting makes a bad impression and does not go to a person who observes etiquette.

Avoid public emotions: It is not a good idea to hug or kiss people in public especially if you are at a formal event. Similarly, avoid getting into conflicts, criticizing or disrespectful communication.

Remember that the rules of etiquette also include being kind, respectful and considerate of others' feelings and comfort.
