Temperance is a mean with regard to pleasures.

A man is the origin of his action.

The greatest virtues are those which are most useful to other persons.

To learn is a natural pleasure, not confined to philosophers, but common to all men.

The same things are best both for individuals and for states, and these are the things which the legislator ought to implant in the minds of his citizens.

Some vices miss what is right because they are deficient, others because they are excessive, in feelings or in actions, while virtue finds and chooses the mean.

There are, then, these three means of effecting persuasion. The man who is to be in command of them must, it is clear, be able (1) to reason logically, (2) to understand human character and goodness in their various forms, and (3) to understand the emotions--that is, to name them and describe them, to know their causes and the way in which they are excited.
