History doesn't always move in a straight line. Sometimes it zigs and zags.

In December, I agreed to extend the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans because it was the only way I could prevent a tax hike on middle-class Americans. But we cannot afford $1 trillion worth of tax cuts for every millionaire and billionaire in our society. We can't afford it. And I refuse to renew them again.

I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.

It betrays a poverty of ambition if all you think about is what goods you can buy instead of what good you can do.

There's one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent and growing threat of a changing climate.
