Too much and too little wine. Give him none, he cannot find truth; give him too much, the same.

Muhammad established a religion by putting his enemies to death; Jesus Christ by commanding his followers to lay down their lives.

All the dignity of man consists in thought. Thought is therefore by its nature a wonderful and incomparable thing. It must have strange defects to be contemptible. But it has such, so that nothing is more ridiculous. How great it is in its nature! How vile it is in its defects! But what is this thought? How foolish it is!

No one is ignorant that there are two avenues by which opinions are received into the soul, which are its two principal powers: the understanding and the will.

Let us now speak according to natural lights. If there is a God, He is infinitely incomprehensible. . . . We are then incapable of knowing of either what He is or if He is. . . .

All that tends not to charity is figurative. The sole aim of the Scripture is charity.
