If a man is not made for God, why is he happy only in God?

The mind has its arrangement; it proceeds from principles to demonstrations. The heart has a different mode of proceeding.

The only shame is to have none.

The strength of a man's virtue should not be measured by his special exertions, but by his habitual acts.

If there is a God, He is infinitely incomprehensible, since, having, neither parts nor limits, He has no affinity to us. We are then incapable of knowing either what He is or if He is. [So] you must wager. Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager then without hesitation that he is.

All the dignity of man consists in thought. Thought is therefore by its nature a wonderful and incomparable thing. It must have strange defects to be contemptible. But it has such, so that nothing is more ridiculous. How great it is in its nature! How vile it is in its defects! But what is this thought? How foolish it is!

Those who are clever in imagination are far more pleased with themselves than prudent men could reasonably be.
