It is the conduct of God, who disposes all things kindly, to put religion into the mind by reason, and into the heart by grace.

There is nothing so insupportable to man as to be in entire repose, without passion, occupation, amusement, or application. Then it is that he feels his own nothingness, isolation, insignificance, dependent nature, powerless, emptiness. Immediately there issue from his soul ennui, sadness, chagrin, vexation, despair.

Continuous eloquence wearies. Grandeur must be abandoned to be appreciated. Continuity in everything is unpleasant. Cold is agreeable, that we may get warm.

A man does not show his greatness by being at one extremity, but rather by touching both at once.

Those who write against vanity want the glory of having written well, and their readers the glory of reading well, and I who write this have the same desire, as perhaps those who read this have also.

Custom determines what is agreeable.

Is it courage in a dying man to go, in weakness and in agony, to affront an almighty and eternal God?
