One of the marks of a certain type of bad man is that he cannot give up a thing himself without wanting everyone else to give it up.

Non-Christians seem to think that the Incarnation implies some particular merit or excellence in humanity. But of course it implies just the reverse: a particular demerit and depravity. No creature that deserved Redemption would need to be redeemed. They that are whole need not the physician. Christ died for men precisely because men are not worth dying for; to make them worth it.

That is the key to history. Terrific energy is expended - civilizations are built up - excellent institutions devised; but each time something goes wrong. Some fatal flaw always brings the selfish and cruel people to the top, and then it all slides back into misery and ruin. In fact, the machine conks. It seems to start up all right and runs a few yards, and then it breaks down.

We must show our Christian colors, if we are to be true to Jesus Christ. We cannot remain silent or concede everything away.

Christian love, either towards God or towards man, is an affair of the will.
