Where, except in uncreated light, can the darkness be drowned?

It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us; it is the very sign of His presence.

Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: put second things first & we lose both first and second things.

And in truth (as I now see) I had the wish to put off my journey as long as I could. Not for any peril or labour it might cost; but because I could see nothing in the whole world for me to do once it was accomplished. Now we cannot...discover our failure to keep God's law except by trying our very hardest (and then failing). Unless we really try, whatever we say there will always be at the back of our minds the idea that if we try harder next time we shall succeed in being completely good.
