Humility is self-forgetfulness.

The world is so much larger than I thought. I thought we went along paths--but it seems there are no paths. The going itself is the path.

I was at this time living, like so many Atheists or Antitheists, in a whirl of contradictions. I maintained that God did not exist. I was also very angry with God for not existing. I was equally angry with Him for creating a world.

Not that I am (I think) in much danger of ceasing to believe in God. The real danger is of coming to believe such dreadful things about Him. The conclusion I dread is not 'So there's no God after all,' but 'So this is what God's really like. Deceive yourself no longer.

I fancy that most people who think at all have done a great deal of their thinking in the first fourteen years.

Love, in its own nature, demands the perfecting of the beloved.

Affection would not be affection if it was loudly and frequently expressed; to produce it in public is like getting your household furniture out for a move. It did very well in its place, but it looks shabby or tawdry or grotesque in the sunshine.
