When we want to be something other than the thing that God wants us to be, we must be wanting what, in fact, will not make us happy...whether we like it or not, God intends to give us what we need, not what we now think we want. Once more, we are embarrassed by the intolerable compliment, by too much love, not too little.

As to...old composers like Schubert or Beethoven, I imagine that, while modern music expresses both feeling, thought and imagination, they expressed pure feeling. And that is why I think that in a sense music is the highest of the arts, because it really begins where the others leave off.

For prayer is request. The essence of request, as distinct from compulsion, is that it may or may not be granted.
