We are born helpless. As soon as we are fully conscious we discover loneliness.

Death opens a door out of a little, dark room (that's all the life we have known before it) into a great, real place where the true sun shines and we shall meet.

The difference [God's] timelessness makes is that this now (which slips away from you even as you say the word now) is for Him infinite.

The New Testament does not envisage solitary religion; regular assembly for worship is everywhere in the epistles.

And all the time - such is the tragic comedy of our situation - we continue to clamor for those very qualities we are rendering impossible. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.

Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistake of our own period. And that means the old books.

Gone! ...And you and I quite crestfallen.
