You know, in Fairyland-Above they said that the underworld was full of devils and dragons. But it isnโt so at all! Folk are just folk, wherever you go, and itโs only a nasty sort of person who thinks a bodyโs a devil just because they come from another country and have different notions. Itโs wild and quick and bold down here, but I like wild things and quick things and bold things, too.
Catherynne M. Valente... but as has been said, September read often, and liked it best when words did not pretend to be simple, but put on their full armor and rode out with colors flying.
Catherynne M. ValenteI wonder sometimes what the memory of God looks like. Is it a palace of infinite rooms, a chest of many jeweled objects, a long, lonely landscape where each tree recalls an eon, each pebble the life of a man? Where do I live, in the memory of God?
Catherynne M. ValenteYou cannot escape where you come from, September. Some part of it remains inside you always, like the slender white heart in the center of the thickest onion.
Catherynne M. ValenteThese are the folk who may pass into the kingdom of heaven: the grief-stricken, lovers, scholars of a certain obsessive disposition. Brute beasts. Women who have become as men and men who have become as women. Writers of books with long titles. Only those knights who have failed to touch the Grail. Industrious women. You, and I, and a boy named Oleg, and a girl with blue hair.
