Why, if species have descended from other species by insensibly fine gradations, do we not everywhere see innumerable transitional forms.

I therefore write this, in case of my sudden death, as my most solemn & last request, which I am sure you will consider the same as if legally entered in my will, that you will devote 400£ to its publication & further will yourself, or through Hensleigh [Wedgwood], take trouble in promoting it.

Delight itself, however, is a weak term to express the feelings of a naturalist.

Not one change of species into another is on record ... we cannot prove that a single species has been changed.
