Everywhere there is apathy. Nobody cares whether that which is preached is true or false. A sermon is a sermon whatever the subject; only, the shorter it is, the better.

We say that Christ so died that He infallibly secured the salvation of a multitude that no man can number, who through Christ's death not only may be saved, but are saved, must be saved, and cannot by any possibility run the hazard of being anything but saved.

A high character might be produced, I suppose, by continued prosperity, but it has very seldom been the case. Adversity, however it may appear to be our foe, is our true friend; and, after a little acquaintance with it, we receive it as a precious thing - the prophecy of a coming joy. It should be no ambition of ours to traverse a path without a thorn or stone.

To me, Calvinism means the placing of the eternal God at the head of all things.

He who is not angry at transgression becomes a partaker in it.

Our hope in Christ for the future is the mainspring and the mainstay of our joy down here today.

Evil things are easy things: for they are natural to our fallen nature. Right things are rare flowers that need cultivation.
