I believe that Reverend [Florine] Thompson's hit on something. My parents, I and a lot of my friends growing up in that community had tremendous drive.

I've always said as a political scientist that "culture" is what we use when we can't explain things. I think it's more about accessibility. I know in a couple of places where there are black members, and they come from pretty much the same socioeconomic level that the white members come from.

This system, built on free markets, free trade and free peoples and American protection, that's what got us from the end of World War II to the extraordinary events of the end of the Cold War and a system that was one of prosperity and peace for a lot of people, including for the United States.
