Without feelings of respect, what is there to distinguish men from beasts?
He who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior.
A good man will certainly also possess courage; but a brave man is not necessarily good.
Even in killing men, observe the rules of propriety.
Respect the gods, but have as little to do with them as possible.
The Master said, “A true gentleman is one who has set his heart upon the Way. A fellow who is ashamed merely of shabby clothing or modest meals is not even worth conversing with.” (Analects 4.9)
