I am increasingly convinced that the time has come to find a way of thinking about spirituality and ethics beyond religion altogether.

There are differences between us. But it doesn't make sense to emphasize that, because my future and yours is connected with everyone else's. So we have to take seriously our concern for all of humanity. When we focus on our individuality, humanity inevitably suffers. And once humanity suffers, each one of us will also suffer.

I believe that to meet the challenge of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. We must all learn to work not just for our own self, family, or nation but for the benefit of all humankind. Universal responsibility is the key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace, the equitable use of natural resources, and through concern for future generations, the proper care of the environment.

I am simply just one monk. That's all.

If someone remains in a peaceful and tranquil state of mind, external surroundings can cause them only a limited disturbance.

All I can do is engage with complete sincerity. Then whatever happens, there is no regret.

Feelings of anger, bitterness, and hate are negative. If I kept those inside me, they would spoil my body and my health. The are of no use.
