At the root of every large struggle in life is the need to be honest about something that we do not feel we can be honest about. We lie to ourselves or other people because the truth might require action on our part, and action requires courage. We say we โdonโt knowโ what is wrong, when we do know what is wrong; we just wish we didnโt. Art lets us tell the truth, but even art can be something to hide behind.
Deb CalettiTo an untrained eye, need and love were as easily mistaken for each other as the real master's painting and a forgery.
Deb CalettiWe are all a volume on a shelf of a library, a story unto ourselves, never possibly described with one word or even very accurately with thousands. A person is never as quiet or unrestrained as they seem, or as bad or good, as vulnerable or as strong, as sweet or as fiesty; we are thickly layered, page upon lying page, behind simple covers. And love - it is not the book itself, but the binding. It can rip us apart or hold us together.
Deb CalettiIt was a shut door, and shut doors meant things kept to yourself. There were reasons you kept things to yourself, and they usually werenโt good, happy, open-air sort of reasons. Still, I didnโt want to see behind that door. You think you want to know everything there is to know about everything there is to know. But you donโt. Not really. I had pried the lid off of the dark places of another person before, I had seen inside. Down deep. You donโt want to look at whatโs rotting there.
Deb CalettiHave you worked here long?" Sebastian asks. Just a few months," I say. "Do you come here a lot?" As if you don't know, Jade. I used to come every day, or, you know, when I could, I'd bring Bo after work. Or just myself." At night sometimes. You'd climb the fence. You'd watch the stars. You'd tilt back your head and look at the sky. You'd think it over, whatever it was.
