Empathy took the edge off, and the truth is, we need our edge. Our edge is trying to speak to us, and we are too, too good at shutting it up.
Deb CalettiYou โฆ You had always made the future feel safe. As long as you were in it too, beside me, I could be okay.
Deb CalettiBut an apology too โ you think youโre giving something, but youโre not. Youโre really asking for something. Youโre asking for forgiveness, youโre asking for the other injured person to make it okay for you. Apologies were harder work for the person getting one than the person giving one.
Deb CalettiThe favorite game of temperamental people is Try to Guess Why Iโm Ticked Off. (Contestant number one, Why do YOU think heโs pissed off? Why, Iโm not sure, Bob, but Iโm going to go with โBecause I Left the Faucet Dripping.โ BEEP. Iโm sorry, thatโs incorrect. The correct answer is: โBecause You Happen to Exist.โ)
Deb CalettiWe look down our noses at people who've made mistakes in relationships. She's so stupid! How could she do that! Our superiority makes us feel better. But Iโd bet everything I have on the fact that people to claim to have a perfect record in love are either lying or have very limited dating experience. People who say, Iโd never do that! Someday, unless you are very, very lucky, youโll have a story to tell. Or not to tell.
