Every situation of justice is an occasion where someone is being humiliated and they want to restore their dignity. They think, "I am a human being and I may not be able to defeat these people or destroy them, but I will hit out at them, because I am not a thing, I am human."

I am passionately opposed to the death penalty for anyone . . . I think, myself, that it is an obscenity . . .

Most people would say "Ah, Mahatma Gandhi, what a wonderful man, Mother Teresa, maybe Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama." And when you look at those people it's not the macho, aggressive, successful people, we may envy them, their bank balances and kind of thing, yes and for being successful. But we do not revere them.

I don't preach a social gospel; I preach the Gospel, period. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is concerned for the whole person.

We shall be free only together, black and white. We shall survive only together, black and white. We can be human only together, black and white.

God is not a diversion.

We were an extraordinary paradox. We are finite creatures made for the infinite.
