Christian love draws no distinction between one enemy and another, except that the more bitter our enemy's hatred, the greater his need of love. Be his enmity political or religious, he has nothing to expect from a follower of Jesus but unqualified love. In such love there is not inner discord between the private person and official capacity. In both we are disciples of Christ, or we are not Christians at all.
Dietrich BonhoefferLove asks nothing in return, but seeks those who need it. And who needs our love more than those who are consumed with hatred and are utterly devoid of love.
Dietrich BonhoefferWe have grown so accustomed to the idea of divine love...that we no longer sense the awe that God's coming should awaken in us.
Dietrich BonhoefferLove, in the sense of spontaneous, unreflective action, spells the death of the old man.
Dietrich BonhoefferInnumerable times a whole Christian community has broken down because it had sprung from a wish dreamโฆ Every human wish dream that is injected into the Christian community is a hindrance to genuine community and must be banished if genuine community is to survive. He who loves his dream of a community more than the Christian community itself becomes a destroyer of the latter, even though his personal intentions may be ever so honest and earnest and sacrificial.
