I was never either pro-culture or counter-culture. I was in a kind of middle state.

It frequently happens that I begin a novel with just a visual image of something, a vague sense of people in three dimensional space.

Writing is a concentrated form of thinking.

It's my contention that each book creates its own structure and its own length. I've written three or four slim books. It may be that the next novel is a big one, but I don't know.

When I read obituaries I always note the age of the deceased. Automatically I relate this figure to my own age. Four years to go, I think. Nine more years. Two years and I'm dead. The power of numbers is never more evident than when we use them to speculate on the time of our dying.

Making things difficult for the reader is less an attack on the reader than it is on the age and its facile knowledge-market.

If an idea seems to find its way towards a stage setting, that's the direction I take. I don't know if I'm trying to achieve anything other than to follow an idea on to the page.
