Writing and reading are the only ways to find your voice. It won't magically burst forth in your poems the next time you sit down to write, or the next; but little by little, as you become aware of more choices and begin to make them -- consciously and unconsciously -- your style will develop.
Dorianne LauxI love people and psychology. As a writer, Iโm not so interested in Fred getting from the living room to the car. I want to go inside Fredโs soul and play there.
Dorianne LauxI also have my backpack of the tried-and-true, and because it is new to [my students], it becomes fresh to me again as well.
Dorianne LauxI'm not the only person in the world who is suffering. I'm trying to talk to the world, responding to those voices.
Dorianne LauxSomeone spoke to me last night,/ told me the truth. Just a few words,. but I recognized it./ I knew I should make myself get up,/ Write it down, but it was late,/ and I was exhausted from working/ all day in the garden, moving rocks./ Now, I remember only the flavor--/ not like food, sweet or sharp./ More like a fine powder, like dust./ And I wasn't elated or frightened,/ but simply rapt, aware./ That's how it is sometimes--/ God comes to your window,/ all bright light and black wings,/ and you're just too tired to open it.
