When the leaders choose to make themselves bidders at an auction of popularity, their talents, in the construction of the state, will be of no service. They will become flatterers instead of legislators; the instruments, not the guides, of the people.

England and Ireland may flourish together. The world is large enough for both of us. Let it be our care not to make ourselves too little for it.

People crushed by law, have no hopes but from power. If laws are their enemies, they will be enemies to laws; and those who have much hope and nothing to lose, will always be dangerous.

Armies will obey him on his personal account. There is no other way of securing military obedience in this state of things.
