Everybody wants to go see the big hit [at the theatre]. Not because it's any good. Because it's the big hit and everybody wants to be able to talk about the big hit.

Writing has got to be an act of discovery....I write to find out what I'm thinking about.

Creativity is magic. Don't examine it too closely.

I suppose if you simplify things, it's going to make it easier to understand.

Progress is a set of assumptions.

I suspect that the theme, the nature of the characters, and the method of getting from the beginning of the play to the end is already established in the unconscious.

Each time I sit down and write a play I try to dismiss from my mind as much as I possibly can the implications of what I've done before, what I'm going to do, what other people think about my work, the failure or success of the previous play. I'm stuck with a new reality that I've got to create.
