I'm a feminist, but I think that romance has been taken away a bit for my generation. I think what people connect with in novels is this idea of an overpowering, encompassing love - and it being more important and special than anything and everything else.
Emma WatsonI'm very crafty! One time I made a television set out of a cardboard box - Everybody thought it was a lark! This was the beginning of a love affair with the arts.
Emma WatsonI've found that if ultimately, if you truly pour your heart into what you believe in, even if it makes you vulnerable, amazing things can and will happen.
Emma WatsonHe [Kenneth Branagh] is the nicest guy. He is absolutely fantastic. Hes really down to earth, really friendly, and he has a great sense of humor. I really liked working with him. Hes a fantastic actor as well. Theres such a presence about him.
Emma WatsonI guess what really forms you as a person is what you do within your family to receive love or attention. In my family, what you had to do to receive attention was to have good conversation at the dinner table or for me to do well at school, and those were really my focuses because that was what was valued the most.
Emma WatsonYou might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl? And what is she doing up on stage at the UN. It's a good question and trust me I have been asking myself the same thing. I don't know if I am qualified to be here. All I know is that I care about this problem. And I want to make it better.
Emma WatsonWhat I find difficult about photo shoots is the line between playing a character - you're being asked by the photographer to take on a role like you would in a movie - and being a fancier version of yourself. It's about finding that line between being spontaneous and open to direction, but also trying to explain to photographers that the "me" is often taken out of context because it has all of this other stuff attached to it.
Emma WatsonL.A. scares the crap out of me. I feel if I have to work out four hours a day, and count the calories of everything I put in my mouth, and have Botox at 22, and obsess about how I look the whole time, I will go mad. I will absolutely lose it.
Emma WatsonI just feel like if I start opening the door to talking about my university experience, then people just kind of... own everything. There was a lot of stuff a couple of years ago saying that I was bullied at Brown and awful things like that, none of which were true.
Emma WatsonI try to avoid wearing black because sometimes it's the easy option. But I'm young, so it's nice to be able to play with color and not just wear black all the time. I can save that for when I'm older.
Emma WatsonI think there's this idea that lipstick is something quite old or something you'd only wear at night.
Emma WatsonMen, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. โฆ Gender equality is your issue, too. โฆ I've seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a menโor less of a man. I've seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don't have the benefits of equality, either.
Emma WatsonIf I went to somewhere busy, I wouldn't last very long. I can't go to a museum - I'll last 10 or 15 minutes in a museum. The problem is that when one person asks for a photograph, then someone sees a flash goes off, then everyone else sort of... it's sort of like a domino effect.
Emma WatsonThe most embarrassing one is that I had no idea - and please excuse me - that you guys call a condom a rubber. My version of a rubber is an eraser. I've done that - very loudly asked for a rubber and people have given me strange looks. That was embarrassing!
Emma WatsonThe character is everything that I felt really strongly against - she's superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She's all of these things, and I realised that I really hated her. How do you play someone that you hate? But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job, or my role as an actress, could be.
Emma WatsonUmm, there are so many people that I've never had one person that I've particularly idolised or I thought "Wow, I want to be just like them." It used to be when I was younger, Julia Roberts, I used to just love her. There is something so appealing about her.
Emma WatsonI'm excited about the ageing process. I'm more interested in women who aren't perfect. They're more compelling.
Emma WatsonI have a real thing for Mexican directors. And I love Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
Emma WatsonIt was unbelievable seeing me as an action figure! In a few months, toddlers all around the country will be biting my head off!
Emma WatsonIf I were in the director's chair, I would cast [Geena Davis] in something awesome every six months if I had the choice.
Emma WatsonIt's very hard to describe your own style. And I'm young, so I'm still experimenting. But I think it's quite British and very much about individuality.
Emma WatsonI used to look back at pictures and cringe but actually I'm quite proud that I've had fun with fashion and don't always look perfect. The only regret I have is when I look at something I wore when I was very young and it obviously looks like it belonged to someone else.
Emma WatsonI'm not going to school just for the academics - I wanted to share ideas, to be around people who are passionate about learning.
Emma WatsonI paint and I draw and I write and I do other things too, and recently some people at school were asking if I'd ever publish any of my work. But I almost feel like I would have to publish it under another name because there's a definition of me out there that feels kind of stuck in the moment when it was formed.
Emma WatsonI get sent Bibles. I have a collection of about 20 in my room. People think I need to be guided.
Emma WatsonA lot of children of this generation have their entire lives made public before they have a say about what they would want. I think it should always be a choice. I love social media, and I love what it can do and how it brings people together, but used in the wrong way, it's incredibly dangerous.
Emma WatsonWE NEED MORE OF THOSE AND IF YOU STILL HATE THE WORD, IT IS NOT THE WORD THAT IS IMPORTANT. IT'S THE IDEA AND THE AMBITION BEHIND IT.
Emma WatsonIf I hadn't done 'Harry Potter,' I would have gone and done years of art. I really do love it, and I'd love to write.
Emma WatsonHow can we effect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?
Emma WatsonI think when you take away all, like, the premieres and press stuff and all the special effects, then you just come down to the fact that it's all about acting, and I think that has been the best bit for me.
Emma WatsonIf I'm feeling tired, I just say, 'I'm going to paint my nails purple and put some lipstick on!'
Emma WatsonI genuinely haven't really had a rebellious phase. I think it's just because of the way I was brought up. I think it's because I left home when I was ten years old.
Emma WatsonI like books that aren't just lovely but that have memories in themselves. Just like playing a song, picking up a book again that has memories can take you back to another place or another time.
Emma WatsonI've had so many moments where seeing other women be fully and truly and authentically themselves, and express that, has given me permission. Once you see it happening, you're like, "Oh, I have permission to do that, too."
Emma WatsonTo be honest, I've always had far too much freedom. I had a job when I was 10. I started living on my own when I was 17 or 18. I've earned my own money; I've traveled the world. What would I rebel against? I've had so much freedom, sometimes it was hard. My parents wanted to protect me, but they had no idea how to. I had to learn as I went and make my own mistakes. I went from being totally unknown and never acting professionally to being in a major movie and being very famous. It all happened so quickly, I didn't have any time to work things out. It's been pretty scary at times.
Emma WatsonBut it's a journey and the sad thing is you only learn from experience, so as much as someone can tell you things, you have to go out there and make your own mistakes in order to learn.
