To invent out of knowledge means to produce inventions that are true. Every man should have a built-in automatic crap detector operating inside him. It also should have a manual drill and a crank handle in case the machine breaks down. If you're going to write, you have to find out what's bad for you. Part of that you learn fast, and then you learn what's good for you.

No subject is terrible if the story is true, if the prose is clean and honest, and if it affirms courage and grace under pressure.

Write as well as you can and finish what you start.

It is a miserable thing to have people writing about your private life while you are alive. I have tried to stop it all that I could but there have been many abuses by people I trusted. You cannot stop trusting people in life but I have learned to be a little bit careful. The way to make people trust-worthy is to trust them.

A man has only one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely plane he loses it to, there his heart will ever be.

So you must write each day better than you possibly can and use the sorrow that you have now to make you know how the early sorrow came.
