In my family, there was one cardinal priority - education. College was not an option; it was mandatory. So even though we didn’t have a lot of money, we made it work. I signed up for financial aid, Pell Grants, work study, anything I could.

When I want to reward myself I get a relaxing massage.

The main thing is to be philanthropic in your everyday life. You don't have to have money to do that. You can do it with your time and your energy.

It was heartbreaking . . . I think it was disappointing because I had such an identity in being 'Mrs. Parker', and being a wife, and so when that's taken away from you, you [think], 'Who am I?

People associate farmworkers with illegal immigrants, and that's really not the case.

I'm very proud of my sisters and everything they've accomplished and done. I'm very proud of where I came from.
