At every step one has to wrestle for truth; one has to surrender for it almost everything to which the heart, to which our love, our trust in life, cling otherwise. That requires greatness of soul: the service of truth is the hardest service. What does it mean, after all, to have integrity in matters of the spirit? That one is severe against one's heart...that one makes of every Yes and No a matter of conscience.

Zarathustra was the first to consider the fight of good and evil the very wheel in the machinery of things: the transposition of morality into the metaphysical realm, as a force, cause, and end in itself, is his work. To have and to want more that is life.

We praise or blame as one or the other affords more opportunity for exhibiting our power of judgement.

The best way to give assistance to those who are deeply embarrassed and to calm them down is to praise them decisively.

In the end we love our desire and not what it is that we desire.

A man far oftener appears to have a decided character from persistently following his temperament than from persistently following his principles.
