The audience keeps singing, keeps making my case, and I just keep strumming until I get close enough to see her eyes. And then I start singing the chorus. Right to her. And she smiles at me, and itโs like weโre the only two people out here, the only ones who know whatโs happening. Which is that this song weโre all singing together is being rewritten. Itโs no longer an angry plea shouted to the void. Right here, on this stage, in front of eighty thousand people, itโs becoming something else. This is our new vow.
Gayle FormanIt wouldโve been easier to die. Itโs not that I want to be dead now. I donโt. I have a lot in my life that I get satisfaction from, that I love. But some days, especially in the beginning, it was so hard. And I couldnโt help but think that it wouldโve been so much simpler to go with the rest of them. But youโyou asked me to stay. You begged me to stay. You stood over me and you made a promise to me, as sacred as any vow.
Gayle FormanDear Willem: Iโve been trying to forget about you and our day in Paris for nine months now, but as you can see, itโs not going all that well. I guess more than anything, I want to know, did you just leave? If you did, itโs okay. I mean itโs not, but if I can know the truth, I can get over it. And if you didnโt leave, I donโt know what to say. Except Iโm sorry that I did. I donโt know what your response will be at getting this letter, like a ghost from your past. But no matter what happened, I hope youโre okay.
Gayle FormanThere were signs. Probably more of them than I ever caught, even after the fact. But I missed them all. Maybe because I wasnโt looking for them. I was too busy checking over my shoulder at the fire Iโd just come through to pay much attention to the thousand-foot cliff looming in front of me.
