I worry about international terror as a method for bringing about political change or sociological change in different countries. And this concerns me because our homeland is not - we see now, is not immune from this kind of dastardly attack. And so I worry about that a lot.

It's not whether people like you but whether they share the bright dreams...and understand the heartbeat of the country.

Extending the ground war into an occupation of Iraq, would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different - and perhaps barren - outcome.

We have had triumphs, we have made mistakes, we have had sex.

International exchanges are not a great tide to sweep away all differences, but they will slowly wear away at the obstacles to peace as surely as water wears away a hard stone.
