The word doctrine, as used in the Bible, means teaching of duty, not theory.

Ambition is but the evil shadow of aspiration.

In bonds Bunyan lived the allegory that he afterwards wrote, and we may thank Bedford Jail for the Pilgrim's Progress. Take comfort, afflicted Christian! When God is about to make pre-eminent use of a person, He put them in the fire.

People must believe what they can, and those who believe more must not be hard upon those who believe less. I doubt if you would have believed it all yourself if you hadn't seen some of it.

Man's rank is his power to uplift.

Now and then, when I look round on my books, they seem to waver as if a wind rippled their solid mass, and another world were about to break through.

It is to the man who is trying to live, to the man who is obedient to the word of the Master, that the word of the Master unfolds itself.
