The truth is all around you, plain to behold. The night is dark and full of terrors, the day bright and beautiful and full of hope. One is black, the other white. There is ice and there is fire. Hate and love. Bitter and sweet. Male and female. Pain and pleasure. Winter and summer. Evil and good. Death and life. Everywhere, opposites.
George R. R. MartinA lot of fantasy names are too much. Theyโre too difficult to pronounce. I wanted the flavour of medieval England. I took actual names we still use today, like โRobertโ, and in some case I tweaked them a little bit. I made โEdwardโ into โEddardโ. If you look back at medieval times, no one knew how to spell their own names. There are a lot of variations that weโve lost.
George R. R. MartinMy dreams are the usual incoherent nonsense. Like most writers, at some point in my career I thought, well, I have these great dreams but I always forget them in the morning so Iโll leave a pad on my bedside table so I can write it down, and then you have some incredible dream and you write it down and the next morning you wake up and youโve written โpurple socksโ.
