I worked out of Hollywood for 10 years and I had my heart broken half a dozen times, so I know all the things that can go wrong.
George R. R. MartinTolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesnโt ask the question: What was Aragornโs tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs arenโt gone โ theyโre in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?
George R. R. MartinThe truth of it is, writers do have peculiar relationships with their characters. They are our children in more senses than one. They are born of our imaginations, carry much of ourselves in them, and embody whatever dreams we dream of immortality.
George R. R. MartinMen will always underestimate you, he said, and their pride will make them want to vanquish you quickly, lest it be said that a woman tried them sorely. Let them spend their strength in furious attacks, whilst you conserve your own. Wait and watch, girl, wait and watch.
George R. R. MartinI donโt know if I have any particular views about women in positions of power, though I do think itโs more difficult for women, particularly in a Medieval setting. They have the additional problem that theyโre a woman and people donโt want them in a position of power in an essentially patriarchal society.
