Even though this is late in an election year, there is no way we can go forward except together and no way anybody can win except by serving the people's urgent needs. We cannot stand still or slip backwards. We must go forward now together.

Real assistance is to help people to help themselves. We can't do everything for everybody, but there is room for all who try to make it.

The political lesson of Watergate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election.

I don't know what the future may hold for me-or for any of us. But I want you to know that I am a man who likes having critics who are not enemies.

To me, the Presidency and the Vice-Presidency were not prizes to be won, but a duty to be done.

Without God there could be no American form of government, nor an American way of life.

It's more like it is now than it ever has been.
