The test of happiness is gratitude.

We do not want, as the newspapers say, a church that will move with the world. We want a church that will move the world.

I have known many happy marriages, but never a compatible one. The whole aim of marriage is to fight through and survive the instant when incompatibility becomes unquestionable. For a man and a woman, as such, are incompatible.

Every remedy is a desperate remedy. Every cure is a miraculous cure. Curing a madman is not arguing with a philosopher; it is casting out a devil.

If a man does not talk to himself, it is because he is not worth talking to.

Sometimes he even embarrassed the company by phrases suggesting that there was some difference between a Liberal and a Conservative.

Happiness is a mystery, like religion, and should never be rationalised.
