Spending of the best part of one's life earning money in order to enjoy questionable liberty during the least valuable part of it, reminds me of the Englishman who went to India to make a fortune first, in order that he might return to England and live the life of a poet. He should have gone up garret at once.

Go confidently ... Live the life that you imagined.

That government is best which governs least.

Let us first be as simple and well as Nature ourselves, dispel the clouds which hang over our brows, and take up a little life into our pores. Do not stay to be an overseer of the poor, but endeavor to become one of the worthies of the world.

The walls that fence our fields, as well as modern Rome, and not less the Parthenon itself, are all built of ruins.

We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal, and then leap in the dark to our success.

I pray that the life of this spring and summer may ever lie fair in my memory.
