As far as history goes I am dead. If there is something beyond I shall have to bounce back. I have found God, but he is insufficient. I am only spiritually dead. Physically I am alive. Morally I am free. The world which I have departed is a menagerie.

To the man whose senses are alive and alert there is not even the need to stir from one's threshold.

Instead of asking 'How much damage will the work in question bring about?' why not ask 'How much good? How much joy?'

It is with the soul that we grasp the essence of another human being, not with the mind, nor even with the heart.

My world of human beings had perished. I was utterly alone in the world and for friends I had the streets, and the streets spoke to me in that sad, bitter language compounded of human misery, yearning, regret, failure, wasted effort

I don't think we should read for instruction but to give our souls a chance to luxuriate.
