I decided when I was 19 that I didn't like all these stereotypes that I was supposed to fit into. I wasn't comfortable and they made me very unhappy. So I tried and I spent a miserable summer, and then I went back to school and said, 'I'm going to do my own thing because I think I have a thing to do. I'm not going to live in anybody else's image because I don't like that.' I felt much better. I didn't do it to rebel against anybody or anything.
Iris ApfelI donโt care what people thinkโฆI learned a long time agoโฆI was 19 and had a very traumatic experienceโฆ.and I learned that I have to go to bed with myself at night and that I have to please myselfโฆand as long as I donโt go out of my way to offend anybody that I love, upset my mother or my husbandโฆIโll do my own thing. And if the public doesnโt like it, itโs their problem, not mine.
Iris ApfelTo lead the good life in New York, the two most important things for a woman are a chauffeur and a fur-lined raincoat. If you have those two things, youโre made.
Iris ApfelI think that if you have to work very hard at dressing up and it makes you nervous or uptight, then you won't look very well because you won't be comfortable. I think it's much better to be comfortable and happy than well dressed.
Iris ApfelI think dressing up or down should be a creative experience. Exciting. Fun. For me the key to personal style lies in accessories. I love objects from different worlds, different eras, combined my way. Never uptight, achieving - hopefully - a kind of throwaway chic
Iris ApfelMy mother knew if you bought a couple of really good architectural outfits and put your money into accessories, you could create a million different looks. She taught that to me, which I think was invaluable.
Iris ApfelI think being appropriate is what you have to do. I think these trend things are terrible, like 'Ten Things You Must Have.' Why must you have them? They're a 'must' for some people, but for some they're not. It's silly. Again, it's all a matter of knowing who you are. You'll never run out of ideas once you do. But it's hard work and some people don't want to put in the time or effort. So they don't. And that's their issue. I don't sit in judgment on how they look.
