What is the fertile humus of the subconscious composed of? Why are certain images converted into recurrent themes in nightmares or writing?

The first lie of fiction is that the author gives some order to the chaos of life: chronological order, or whatever order the author chooses.

My grandfather was dying, and told the family he had decided to die. ...
