All of us, just because we are able to talk, also believe we are able to talk about language.

Artists have a double relationship towards nature: they are her master and her slave at the same time. They are her slave in so far as they must work with means of this world so as to be understood; her master in so far as they subject these means to their higher goals and make them subservient to them.

Man must strive, and striving he must err.

But the valid issue is the extent to which man knows how to form and master the material at his command.

It has been said that figures rule the world. Maybe. But I am sure that figures show us whether it is being ruled well or badly.

We often feel that we lack something, and seem to see that very quality in someone else, promptly attributing all our own qualities to him too, and a kind of ideal contentment as well. And so the happy mortal is a model of complete perfection--which we have ourselves created.

There is no crime of which I do not deem myself capable.
