The subject then of these chapters may be stated thus, - man's only righteousness is through the mercy of God in Christ, which being offered by the Gospel is apprehended by faith.

Without the Gospel everything is useless and vain.

It behooves us to accomplish what God requires of us, even when we are in the greatest despair respecting the results.

How can it be said that the weakness of the human will is aided so as to enable it to aspire effectually to the choice of good, when the fact is, that it must be wholly transformed and renewed?

Mingled vanity and pride appear in this, that when miserable men do seek after God, instead of ascending higher than themselves as they ought to do, they measure him by their own carnal stupidity, and neglecting solid inquiry, fly off to indulge their curiosity in vain speculation.

Faith and hope...are the wings by which our souls, rising above the world, are lifted up to God.

No man can come to God but by an extraordinary revelation of the Spirit.
