All of us in the Senate live in an iron lung-the iron lung of politics, and it is no easy task to emerge from that rarified atmosphere in order to breathe the same fresh air our constituents breathe.

Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.

Persons are judged to be great because of the positive qualities they possess, not because of the absence of faults.

And a revolution of automation finds machines replacing men in the mines and mills of America, without replacing their incomes or their training or their needs to pay the family doctor, grocer and landlord.

But because I am a Catholic, and no Catholic has ever been elected president, the real issues in this campaign have been obscured - perhaps deliberately, in some quarters less responsible than this. So it is apparently necessary for me to state once again not what kind of church I believe in - for that should be important only to me - but what kind of America I believe in.

Arms alone are not enough to keep the peace. It must be kept by men.

Diplomacy and defense are not substitutes for one another. Either alone would fail.
