Diplomacy and defense are not substitutes for one another. Either alone would fail.

Persons are judged to be great because of the positive qualities they possess, not because of the absence of faults.

Any danger spot is tenable if men, brave men, will make it so.

But I think it is also important that we pay tribute and acknowledge another great principle, and that is the principle of religious conviction. Religious freedom has no significance unless it is accompanied by conviction.

Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are; but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, 'rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation', a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.

In a time of domestic crisis, men of goodwill and generosity should be able to unite regardless of party or politics.

The margin is narrow, but the responsibility is clear.
