If he is successful, that will only confirm the general belief in his rashness; and if in the short run he is unsuccessful, which is very likely, he will not receive much mercy. Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally.

The boom, not the slump, is the right time for austerity at the Treasury.

The old saying holds. Owe your banker �1000 and you are at his mercy; owe him �1 million and the position is reversed.

The Economic Problem...the problem of want and poverty and the economic struggle between classes and nations, is nothing but a frightful muddle, a transitory and unnecessary muddle.
