I am the greatest advocate of the Constitution....The only fault I find with the Constitution is, it is not broad enough to cover the whole ground. Although it provides that all men shall enjoy religious freedom, yet it does not provide the manner by which that freedom can be preserved, nor for the punishment of Government officers who refuse to protect the people in their religious rights, punish those mobs, states, or communities who interfere with the rights of the people on account of their religion. Its sentiments are good, but it provides no means of enforcing them.
Joseph Smith, Jr.Mobs may assemble, calumny may defame, but the work of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent.
Joseph Smith, Jr.It is a false idea that the Saints will escape all the judgments, whilst the wicked suffer; for all flesh is subject to suffer and โthe righteous shall hardly escape.โ โฆSo that is an unhallowed principle to say that such and such have transgressed because they have been preyed upon by disease or death, for all flesh is subject to death; and the Savior has said, โjudge not, lest ye be judged.
Joseph Smith, Jr.Knowledge does away with darkness, suspense, and doubt; for these cannot exist where knowledge is . . . In knowledge there is power.
Joseph Smith, Jr.When a man works by faith, he works by mental exertion instead of by physical force.
Joseph Smith, Jr.When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has for the truthโs sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God that he has been called to make this sacrifice because he seeks to do his will, he does know, most assuredly, that God does and will accept his sacrifice and offering, and that he has not, nor will not seek his face in vain.
