We choose it because it makes possible the only dignified form of human coexistence, the only form in which we can be fully responsible for ourselves. Whether we realize its possibilities depends on all kinds of things — and above all on ourselves.

The belief in a political Utopia is especially dangerous. This is possibly connected with the fact that the search for a better world, like the investigation of our environment, is (if I am correct) one of the oldest and most important of all the instincts.

Our belief in any particular natural law cannot have a safer basis than our unsuccessful critical attempts to refute it.

Philosophers should consider the fact that the greatest happiness principle can easily be made an excuse for a benevolent dictatorship.
