Divorce was emotionally traumatic for me. It was the death of a dream. I was in fairytale land, and the reality of it wasn't so. But I don't really like talking about it anymore, because it feels like a thousand lifetimes ago, and also it makes me look desperate, like I need it for attention.
Katy PerryI think people appreciate a songwriter who shows different sides. The whole angst thing is cool, but if that's all you've got, it's just boring. Everything I write, whether it's happy or sad, has a sense of humor to it.
Katy PerryI have multipersonality disorder - in a very good way, of course - when it comes to my fashion choices.
Katy PerryI think that everybody that's coming out to Warped Tour, when they come to see the show, they're always like; let's go see that band that band that band and... that girl. I think that I tend to be that girl sometimes and I think that it's cool that I get to hang out with this Summer camp of smelly boys.
Katy PerryUnfortunately, I think a lot of people are affected more by the idea of fame than the actual work ethic involved. A lot of them just want to be reality TV-type people who don't do anything.
Katy PerryI was not even allowed to mention the name Madonna in my household - just because I think the '80s and '90s were so Madonna-filled. She was going through so many evolutions at that time.
Katy PerryI think some people will die on the stage, and I'm not so sure I want to do that. Like, I want to have kids! I'm totally fine with saying that. I think some people are scared because they're worried it's going to ruin their career, but I want to live a full life.
Katy PerryI like to go out there looking like a strong woman, because I am strong. But I am also a woman who goes through all kinds of problems and highs and lows.
Katy PerrySometimes if you want to achieve something great, there will be curveballs. You just have to dodge them every once in a while.
Katy PerryI still want to make a pop record. I want to make a more sonically current pop record. I maybe want to make people move a little bit more.
Katy PerryI wanted it to be like Amy Grant, but it didn't pan out that way. My label actually went bankrupt, and I was left without a home.
Katy PerryPeople always ask me, 'What is it that you regret?' And I say, 'nothing, because I could not buy what I've learned.' And I apply those things to my life I learn. And hopefully, hopefully it helps me to be a better human in the future and make better choices.
Katy PerryI don't follow trends. I'm just not into what everyone else is wearing. I have my own look, which I call 'Lolita Meets Old Hollywood Glam.'
Katy PerryMy religious upbringing was comically strict โ even the Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner was banned. In our house, no one was allowed to refer to deviled eggs. We had to call them angelic eggs. We were never allowed to swear. I'd get into trouble just for saying 'Hell no'. If you dropped a hammer on your toe in our house you had to say something like 'Jiminy Christmas'. The only music we were allowed to listen to was gospel. No wonder I rebelled.
Katy PerryMy career is like an artichoke. People might think that the leaves are tasty and buttered up and delicious, and they don't even know that there's something magical hidden at the base of it. There's a whole other side of me that people didn't know existed.
Katy PerryPeople love the idea of a good girl gone bad, thinking that my parents were so strict and disowned me, but that actually wasn't the case. Even though they don't necessarily agree with some of the things I do, they love me as their daughter. That's always been their perspective.
Katy PerryI just want to make it very clear that I come from very humble beginnings, and I worked for everything!
Katy PerryI say what I think. I'm a real person, not some manufactured pop tart who's afraid to step out of the hotel room. I am flawed. I swear, I have the occasional cocktail, I pick my nose and I fart. I'm not running for any presidential campaign at the moment. I'm a sassy girl.
Katy PerryYou look at someone like Beyoncรฉ singing Single Ladies, when we all know she's married. Some of it is just for entertainment.
Katy PerryIf you are not happy with something, you should change it. So I went to a lot of therapy, and finally, I am able to speak up for myself: You are going to hear me roar!
Katy PerryI'm not ashamed, or embarrassed. I'm happy that I grew up listening to gospel music and came from where I came from. I feel like I have a history and a story. That's what I am and that's what I'll always be from. I was never running away from it.
Katy PerryI'm not coming out trying to prove anything to anyone, like, 'Oh, I'm in assless chaps!' or 'I can't be tamed!' I've already been through that phase. I started at 23, you know?
Katy PerryI think that maybe people comment on the internet because they never know if they're going to be able to meet that one person and they want to have a say so, or what have-you.
Katy PerryBoom, boom, boom, Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon, It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through, ooh, ooh. Cause, baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Oh! Oh! Oh!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y. Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go, "Oh! Oh! Oh!" You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down-own-own.
Katy PerryI have a confidence because my research shows that I should just really trust my instincts.
Katy PerryI feel like I have a little bit of a fresh ear when creating music. I'm not trying to be like anything else, cuz I have no idea what anything else is like!
Katy PerryMy singing is really important to me, but when children come along they'll be my main focus. I'd never put my career in front of my babies - it'd be a case of fitting jobs around them.
Katy PerryI get a lot of the ideas when I'm resting - either when I'm meditating or getting some kind of work done on my back, like physical therapy or acupuncture. That's where I get my best ideas, maybe because I'm balancing my body.
Katy PerryI came from a lot of intolerance and prejudice, which aren't necessarily healthy to evolve as a human.
Katy PerryI missed out on the Spice Girls. I missed out on all those big pop phenomenon and missed out even on the Madonna records. It's okay, cuz I'm playing catch-up on everything now.
Katy PerryKids are so smart these days. They sense when there's a phony bologna out there. Especially in music, when they see something that's being marketed to them, they'll call it out. They'll be like, "This chick is bullshit."
Katy PerryYou could travel the world, but nothing comes close to the golden coast. Once you party with us, you'll be falling in love, Oooooh Oh Oooooh!
Katy PerryI think you can have it all, you just have to work really hard because great things don't come easily.
