I always wanted to get married with just candles! I think candlelight is the most beautiful light there is and there's something very spiritual about it.

I believe the experiences of life are more important than any film you make.

I credit literature for the reason I act because that was the door to me saying, ‘Oh! I can be somebody else. I can exist as someone else.’

I do research. I do emotional sort of Method work. Somehow it’s a huge mishmash of things that becomes my own acting process and my own way of navigating through something. But ultimately the desire is to be honest, and for that truth to bleed through into your work and onto the screen.

That sort of detailed filmmaking is one, hard to do and not have it be pretentious, and two, have it tell the story, which is what you're taught, that cinema is the language of images and you really should be able to make a film with no dialogue and tell a story.

We worked with Jean-Marc [Vallée] [on Big Little Lies] in terms of finding [style]. Because when you have five women, you're trying to find how they each dress and how they present themselves to the world.

Stay out of the sun, because it is the worst thing in terms of aging. I'm very medical. I come from a medical family.
