French intellectual life has, in my opinion, been turned into something cheap and meretricious by the 'star' system. It is like Hollywood. What is striking, however, is the pomposity and self-importance, at each stage.

Noam ChomskyAs for organs, traits, etc., being "for" something, the notion may be a useful shorthand, but shouldn't be taken too seriously, if only because of the ubiquitous phenomenon of exaptation.
